Long before we ever used the phrase The Hidden Heritage Of Your Home, we experienced its meaning firsthand. It began, unexpectedly, with a vessel of character and endurance, an old wooden fishing trawler named Shemaron.
When we first stepped aboard her, she carried the quiet authority of something well lived. Generations of fishermen had worn the wheel smooth with their hands. The engine thudded with steady resolve beneath our feet. Salt spray and hard winds shaped her timbers over decades, carving grain and softening edges. Every mark and dent told of labour, skill and resilience.
Restoring her was just as much an act of stewardship as of repair.
As we researched her past, we traced harbour records, old photographs, and forgotten newspaper reports. We began to understand how ownership is enriched by knowledge. The more we uncovered, the deeper our connection grew. Her story did not begin with us; we had simply become part of its continuing chapter.
That realisation shaped everything that followed.
From Vessel to Residence: A Natural Evolution
I brought our research together in a book chronicling Shemaron’s life. After its publication, my long-time colleague Rosie and I naturally started discussing other forms of living heritage.
Rosie has devoted decades to historical research and to teaching others how to uncover the past with care. She has long argued that heritage extends far beyond stately homes and landmark buildings. It lives powerfully within Georgian terraces, Victorian townhouses, stone cottages, and Edwardian villas. This heritage is embedded in the architecture of daily life.
We began to ask:
What stories lie quietly within the walls of your own home?
Who commissioned its construction?
Which trades were practiced behind its doors?
How did national movements, industrial, social, and architectural, shape its evolution?
These are not abstract questions. They reveal lives once lived with purpose. The cordwainer built boots by lamplight. The merchant recorded shipments in a ledger. The young family marked milestones within newly plastered rooms.
A house is never simply a structure. It is a record of continuity.

A House History Worthy of the Property
From the outset, we were clear: the presentation must reflect the calibre of our research.
Each commission results in a handcrafted folio professionally researched, carefully written and beautifully designed. Within it you will find:
- A detailed social history
- Archival maps and census documentation
- Historic and primary source material
- A carefully constructed timeline of residents
- Bespoke illustrations that honour the building’s period character
This is not a digital summary to be filed away. We offer a heritage document, substantial, elegant and designed to endure. A piece to display on your walls. A legacy to pass forward.
Design Rooted in Understanding
The folio’s visual identity is shaped by Wendy. Her background in archaeology, museum practice, and traditional building conservation ensures both aesthetic refinement and historical sensitivity.
Her illustrations capture not simply facades, but atmosphere respecting proportion, material and period detail. The result is a presentation that complements the architectural dignity of your property.
Why It Matters
Understanding your home’s past transforms your relationship with it.
A well-researched house history can:
- Inform sensitive renovation and conservation decisions
- Support heritage or planning discussions
- Enhance provenance when bringing a property to market
- Deepen personal connection to place
- Preserve architectural memory for future custodians
Above all, it offers perspective. You are not simply occupying a house; you are stewarding a story.
