Our content
Unless otherwise stated, the original written content, research, illustrations, photographs, maps, graphics and other creative material produced for House History Research / Discovering Heritage is protected by copyright.
Copyright arises automatically in original written and artistic work in the UK. A copyright notice is not required for protection, but we use one to make our position clear.
© 2026 Discovering Heritage. All rights reserved.
Our website contains original research and creative work that has taken considerable time, expertise and resources to produce. We ask that it is respected and not reproduced without permission.
What you may do
You are welcome to:

- quote a short passage for genuine research, discussion or review, provided that you clearly credit Discovering Heritage and link to the original article
- share links to our free resources with others who may find them useful.
Linking to our website is encouraged. Copying our content and publishing it elsewhere is not the same as sharing a link.
What you may not do without permission
You may not, without our prior written permission:
- copy or republish our articles or substantial portions of them
- reproduce our house-history research or reports
- reproduce, download, alter or republish our illustrations, maps or graphics
- copy photographs from our website for use elsewhere

This applies whether the material is reproduced commercially or made available free of charge.
Copyright gives the rights holder control over certain uses of their work, including copying, distribution, communication to the public and adaptation.
Historical facts and sources
Our house-history research is based on historical records and sources held by archives, libraries, record offices and other institutions.
We do not claim copyright over historical facts themselves. Our copyright applies to our original research, written expression, interpretation, presentation and creative work.
Where appropriate, we identify the archives, collections and sources used in our research.
The existence of a historical record does not necessarily mean that the material itself is free to reproduce. Copyright and other rights may apply to documents, photographs, maps and other archival material, depending on the source and its date.
Research by other authors
Some articles published by Discovering Heritage contain research contributed by other historians, researchers or writers.
Where this applies, the original researcher or author will be identified. Copyright in their original work remains with the relevant rights holder unless it has been formally transferred to Discovering Heritage.
The David Wardell Archive
A number of local-history articles on this website were generously contributed by the late David Wardell.
We are pleased to continue making David’s research freely available so that his work can be enjoyed and used as a resource by people interested in the history of Newcastle and the North East.
Where an article contains David’s original research, it is identified as such. Permission to publish his work does not, by itself, mean that copyright has been transferred to Discovering Heritage.
Please contact us if you wish to reproduce David’s research beyond normal quotation and linking.
Illustrations, maps and commissioned artwork
Illustrations and maps created for Discovering Heritage are protected by copyright.
Unless a separate written agreement states otherwise, purchasing a house-history service, illustration or collection does not automatically transfer copyright in the underlying artwork or research to the customer.
Clients may display artwork supplied as part of their purchase for their own personal enjoyment, but reproduction for commercial purposes or publication elsewhere requires permission.
Where artwork has been created by an independent artist or other third party, copyright may remain with the creator. In those circumstances, permission may need to be obtained from the creator as well as from Discovering Heritage.
Client photographs and material
Customers sometimes provide photographs, documents and other material for use in their house-history research.
We respect the rights of the people who own or created these materials. Where you provide material to us, you should ensure that you have the right to allow us to use it for the agreed research or project.
We will not assume that permission to use a photograph or document for a house-history project gives us unrestricted permission to reproduce it elsewhere.
Permission to reproduce our work
If you would like to reproduce an article, extract, illustration, map, photograph or other material from this website, please contact us before doing so.
Please tell us:
- which material you would like to use
- where and how it will be used
- whether the use is commercial or non-commercial
- the proposed publication, website or platform
- how much of the material you would like to reproduce.
Permission will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Where permission is granted, we may require a specific credit and a link to the original material.
Permission to use one piece of content does not automatically give permission to use other material from this website.
AI, automated systems and data scraping
Our original articles, research, illustrations, photographs, maps and other creative material are not made available for wholesale copying, republication or commercial exploitation by automated systems.
You may link to our published pages and use our website in the ordinary way. However, systematic copying, scraping, downloading or reproducing substantial amounts of our content without permission is not permitted.
If you believe we have used your material incorrectly
We aim to identify and credit the creators and sources of material used on this website appropriately.
If you believe that material has been published without the necessary permission or attribution, please contact us with details of the material concerned and the rights you believe you hold.
We will investigate the matter and, where appropriate, take corrective action.
